The U.S. election is decided, on Saturday Joe Biden won the presidency. Congratulations and political wishes were quickly sent from all over the world, and spontaneous celebrations took place in many US cities. But in view of the many complaints against the results, skepticism prevails in some places.
After four days of waiting, Donald Trump received the news of his election defeat in golf. He reacted by stating that he did not recognize the election results and would bring further lawsuits on Monday. In Austria people were happy about the news. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen “warmly” congratulated Biden and his future Vice President Kamala Harris on Twitter. “Great tasks of our time, such as the fight against the climate crisis or the corona pandemic, can only be solved together as an international community of states. The USA and Europe also bear global responsibility here. Furthermore, the German version of the tweet, which was also sent in English, said: “We look forward to strong transatlantic cooperation in the coming years – and to welcoming the USA back to the Paris Climate Agreement! Europe stands ready.”
Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) also congratulated on Twitter. “I look forward to close cooperation in the future. Europe and the USA are united by a system of values that we stand up for together,” the Chancellor said on Saturday. The strategic partnership between Austria and the USA “should also be further expanded in the coming years”.
According to Kurz, who visited US President Trump at the White House in February 2019, cooperation between the EU and the US needs to be deepened “in dealing with the Corona pandemic, in the fight against terrorism and extremism or in the joint fight against climate change”. A second reception in March 2020 was cancelled at short notice due to the coronavirus crisis.
Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler likewise congratulated the elected President. Biden will “strive to return to the path of cooperation that the currently deeply divided United States, but also the world, so urgently needs in these difficult times,” the Green leader said on Twitter. All states are facing extraordinary challenges, Kogler stressed, citing “the global health crisis, the resulting economic crisis and, in the long term, most significantly the climate crisis. The fact that Biden “as one of his first measures announced the U.S. return to the Paris climate agreement gives us all a sigh of relief. The active participation of the USA is indispensable if we still want to avert the climate catastrophe.
